A cool thing or hot thing?
At 4.9 kg, the Omen X laptop is not a lightweight, given the components used and the materials (aluminum).
That’s why HP Omen X 17 doesn’t rattle and can’t be bent or pressed in. The Full HD screen is bright and matt and prevents annoying reflections. The panel from AU Optronics supports Nvidia’s G-Sync technology for smoother gameplay without tearing. Games are also played back more smoothly, as the display operates at a 120 Hz frame rate instead of the usual 60 Hz.
The performance is top[pullquote]All in all, the HP Omen X 17 is an all-rounder among gaming laptops and does many things right. Gaming performance isn’t the best, but it’s good enough. [/pullquote]
The HP Omen X 17 is a high-end gaming laptop and therefore equipped with the appropriate hardware. Many gaming laptops use the proven combination Intel Core i7-7000HQ / Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080, but the Omen X 17 is optionally available with the Core i7-7820HK, GeForce GTX 1080 and a Samsung PM961 NVMe SSD. This also has a TDP of 45 watts, but the processor can be overclocked thanks to the free multiplier.
The laptop scores an excellent 4,429 points in the current 3DMark. Even an elaborate game like “Hellblade – Senua’s Sacrifice” runs with maximum details at 50 fps. The “Omen Command Center” is used for configuration, which is called up via a separate key.
Such powerful technology inevitably raises the question of cooling. Two fans, four 3.5 mm heat pipes, a vapor chamber and numerous small ventilation openings should reliably transport the heat out of the device to the back. Thus a quiet whisper is audible that does not really disturb. However, if you challenge it with 3D games, not only the CPU and graphics card accelerate, but also the fans. The result is a noise that can be clearly heard, but because of its uniformity, it will no longer be noticed at some point.
Battery low, but nice equipment
For the input, a mechanical keyboard with 2.5 mm keystroke was installed, whose RGB-illumination is freely configurable. The loudspeakers are from Bang & Olufsen and provide simulated surround sound.
Three USB 3.0 Type-A and two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 specification, one RJ45 jack, and one Mini DisplayPort are available. A small window allows you to look inside without opening your laptop. Fortunately, upgrading SSD, HDD and RAM bolts is also very easy, because a common access allows complete access to the above-mentioned interchangeable components.
Disappointing was the battery life in the test. Even light office tasks were over after just over two hours. If you use your laptop for demanding games, you will have to plug it into the wall socket after about an hour. The Omen X 17 is clearly intended for stationary operation, battery operation should only be regarded as a bridging function.
The HP Omen X 17 gaming laptop offers enormous performance and lets even complex PC games run smoothly and smoothly. In addition, the device scores with extras such as the very good mechanical keyboard with configurable backlight or the 120 Hz display. Less appealing is the extremely short battery life. The latter is the Omen X 17 nevertheless an outstanding, optically addressable for many gamers.
