Apple iPhone 8 Plus VS. iPhone 7 Plus Quick Test

Why choose the new Apple smartphones? Is the change worthwhile?

We at wholesnaps have compared the two smartphones – iPhone 8 Plus & iPhone 7 Plus – at first glance there is hardly any difference between the two. Is the change worthwhile?

In terms of design, the only difference between the two models is the reverse side, which is made of glass on the iPhone 8. The upgraded camera, the new processor, and the augmented reality function are the main features of the new Apple smartphone. Wireless charging technology, which has already become mandatory for many top smartphones, is another plus. However, whether these innovations justify an upgrade from iPhone 7 Plus to iPhone 8 Plus is up to everyone to decide for themselves.

Housing and Design

The appearance of both models hardly differs from each other. The iPhone 8 Plus is a little bigger, thicker and heavier than the iPhone 7 Plus. The new iPhone 8 Plus 5.5-inch model measures 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm at 202 grams and the older version iPhone 7 Plus 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm at 188 grams.

If you take a close look at it, you will recognize the missing antenna strip on the top and bottom of the back of the iPhone 8 Plus. This is certainly due to the new glass back. Often to the sorrow of the users, if the device has fallen down once. According to Apple, the glass of the new iPhone generation is the toughest that has ever been built into a smartphone.

With the iPhone 7 Plus, you can still choose between five colors. Among other things, the high-gloss polished diamond black, which was introduced for the first time in 2016, is also included. The iPhone 8 Plus now comes in three colors: silver, space grey, and gold. All four smartphones are protected against dust and splash water in accordance with IP67. Turning to the front you notice that nothing much has changed. Except for the new Apple, the phone has a physical home button that holds the Touch ID.

There are some differences between iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus. With 12 megapixels, the resolution of the iPhone 8 Plus’s sensor has remained the same, but it is now somewhat larger, faster and has a new color filter with deeper pixels. The two smartphones are equipped with a dual camera (one f/1.8 aperture each) with wide-angle and telephoto lens. The new iPhone Plus also features an optical zoom and portrait mode, which makes it possible to clear the foreground. What’s new here is the portrait light – the iPhone 8 Plus uses software to simulate various lighting effects, which can also be adapted retrospectively. In addition, the new models have a 4x LED flash with true-tone function and slow synchronization.

Nothing has changed with the front camera on both iPhones. Both iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 7 Plus rely on a 7-megapixel camera with a f/2.2 aperture.

The iPhone 8 Plus also offers a little more video features than its predecessor. 4K video recording is now supported at 24 fps, 30 fps, and 60 fps. In addition, there is a new slow-motion mode that supports full HD video at up to 240 fps.

Processor, Battery, and Connectivity

Apple is installing a new A11 bionic chip with a neural unit in the 2017 iPhones and integrating an M11 motion coprocessor. The new chip has six cores, two of which provide power and four are responsible for efficiency. Compared to the processor of the iPhone 7 Plus, the new iPhone is supposed to deliver up to 70 percent more power thanks to a new performance controller. Another new feature is a GPU that delivers 30 percent faster graphics performance, enabling the new augmented reality functions in iPhone 8 Plus, for example.

Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus relies for the first time on the wireless Qi standard for charging technology. The new iPhone 8 models also have a quick charge function when you buy the right accessories. The battery should continue to last about as long as in the previous models. This allows up to 21 hours of talk time.

Apple has integrated Bluetooth 5.0 into the iPhone 8 Plus, instead of Bluetooth 4.2 as in its predecessor model, and now also comes with an NFC reading mode on the iPhone 8 Plus.
