Samsung Galaxy S9 | S9+ in Review

Samsung’s new high-end model introduces new features

Only recently, Samsung presented the further development of its top models S8 and S8 Plus at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Now the successors have arrived and the Samsung Galaxy S9 has gained in performance under its hood. In a quick review, the device turns out to be extremely handy, but without any major differences to its predecessor.

Design and Display

With the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, the Samsung brings only minor improvements compared to its predecessors, such as slightly narrower frames at the top and bottom. The housing is still dust- and waterproof according to IP68 and is made of glass, which, as usual, is of high quality and feels pleasant to the touch. Due to their slim design, both S9 models are easy to handle. In addition to the USB-C port on the bottom, there is also a jack socket for connecting headphones. The fingerprint scanner of the new Galaxy S9 is now under the camera. This has two advantages: It’s easier to reach and you don’t accidentally wipe the camera.

Both models feature 5.8 “and 6.2” Super AMOLED screens with a resolution of 2,960 × 1,440 pixels. The screen is bent at the edges to give the impression of an almost frameless smartphone.

Technical equipment and Battery

The technical equipment is also at its best again. The drive is powered by the latest Octa Core CPU Exynos 9810, which offers a speed of up to 2.7 GHz. The Galaxy S9’s main memory is 4 GB, the S9+ can rely on a full 6 GB. We don’t have benchmark results yet, but the mobile phone ran smoothly in the first test without jerking. The user memory of 64 GB is the same with 64 GB, which can also be extended to the S9 generation via micro SD card.

In terms of connectivity, there are Bluetooth 5.0, WLAN-ac, Gigabit LTE and current Android 8.0 on board – everything you can expect from such a phone.

Unfortunately, there is no enlargement of the battery – so it remains at 3000 and 3500 mAh. very sad! But here too we have to wait for the test to be able to judge – but the runtime of the S8 models was in any case ok.

Outstanding camera and AR Emoji

While the S9 is still equipped with a single camera with 12 megapixels, the S9+ offers a dual camera on the back – i. e. two cameras with 12 megapixels each. Once with a telephoto lens for zooming – without any loss of quality – and once with a wide-angle lens.

But now it’s getting exciting: the main camera of the S9 and S9+ has been equipped with f/1.5 and f/2.4 with two aperture settings. These are mechanically adapted by the electronics for use in bright or dark environments. In Normal mode, you can choose between the f/1.5 aperture at a brightness of up to 100 lux and the f/2.4 aperture at a brightness of up to 100 lux. In Pro mode, the user can determine this himself/herself.

Another top feature like iPhone X can now be animated with up to 18 facial expressions on Samsung Emojis. It resolves with 8 megapixels and thanks to 3D recognition, your face movements are recognized and reflected. The recorded emojis are made available for the various messaging and news apps (Facebook, Whatsapp).

In the first practical test, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the S9 Plus make an excellent impression. Furthermore, there are all the latest features and best hardware parts on board, which you can get in this way. Samsung promises better photo quality in the twilight. In addition, the Galaxy S9 works very fast. Outwardly, apart from a better placement of the fingerprint scanner, little has changed. On the whole, Samsung has created an innovative smartphone.
